Research inventoryArchaeological Project of Sissi (SArPédon)
(Faculté de philosophie et lettres / Département d'archéologie et d'histoire de l'art / ARKA)
Period
Start date : 01/01/2007 End date : 01/01/2017
Project description
The project aims the full archaeological exploration of a secondary site established on a hill on the north coast of the Greek island of Crete. It implies a topographical, geomorphological and electromagnetic coverage using specialised techniques (GPR) but also the systematic excavation and full study of a site (settlement and cemetery). Surface finds allow to assume a considerable diachronic occupation - from Early Minoan (c. 3000 BC) till the Roman period - and a historical interest that is partly directed by the strategic location of the site (on the crossroads of several land and sea routes) and partly influenced by its links with the major site of the region as represented by the Minoan palace at Malia, the most important Cretan city during the Middle Bronze Age (c. 2000-1750 BC). In contrast to the latter, the site at Sissi seems not to have been abandoned after 1200 BC. The project starts in the summer of 2007 under the auspices of the Belgian School at Athens.
